Comprehensive Eye Care

Comprehensive Eye and Vision Examination

Undergoing Periodic eye and vision examinations are an important part of preventive health care. Many eye and vision problems show no obvious signs or symptoms. As a result, individuals are often unaware of the eye problems and are completely taken by surprise when diagnosed in these eye examinations. Early diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems are important for maintaining good vision and eye health, and when possible, preventing vision loss.

Patient history helps to determine any symptoms the individual is experiencing, comprehensive eye and vision examination helps investigate the patient’s past eye health extensively and helps in bringing out medically useful insights.

Abnormal results during comprehensive eye and vision examination may indicate the following conditions

  • Astigmatism
  • Hyperopia
  • Myopia
  • Presbyopia
Comprehensive Eye and Vision Examination Services include
  • Visual Acuity measurement
  • Preliminary Eye tests (depth perception, color vision, eye muscle movements, peripheral or side vision, and the response of pupil to light)
  • Keratometry (measurement of anterior corneal curvature)
  • Refraction
  • Eye focusing, eye teaming, and eye movement testing
  • Eye health evaluation

Freedom from glasses

Who wouldn't want “Freedom from Glasses”? With the existing medical advances in eye care one can choose to have perfect eye sight without ever having to use glasses. Refractive surgery can be employed to correct refractive errors such as Myopia (near sightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness), Astigmatism or Presbyopia. This surgical procedure is used to reshape the corneal curvature (the clear dome-shaped curve of eye lens). LASIK (Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis) surgery is the most widely performed of refractive surgeries. Besides LASIK, ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is one other surgery employed to correct refractive errors. ICL is suggested for patients who are not suitable for LASIK surgery.

Why Would You Be Interested In LASIK?
  • You do not want to wear spectacles or contact lenses
  • You feel visually and socially restricted by contact lenses
  • You are intolerant to contact lenses
  • You want to participate in certain outdoor sports where spectacles and contact lenses would be an obstacle
  • You plan to certain professions wherein excellent, uncorrected visual acuity is a pre-requisite
Who can undergo laser correction procedures?
  • Who are at least 18 years old
  • Who are in good general health
  • Who have no record of eye diseases
  • Who are not pregnant
  • Who do not suffer from any unstable medical condition
  • Possess stable refraction
The following technology is available at Sandhya Eye Hospitals to perform laser surgeries
  • Latest Femtosecond lasers (Intralase-FS & Intracor-520F)
  • Excimer Laser 217z
  • Personalized Treatment using Advanced "PTA" which is the latest in Lasik procedures
  • Zyoptix Ultimate
  • ICL (Implantable Collamer Lenses)
  • INTRACOR - Latest in near vision correction with laser
Services offered at Sandhya Eye Hospitals include

  • Advanced ZYOPTIX PERSONALIZED LASIK
  • Advanced ZYOPTIX ASP LASIK
  • Advanced ZYOPTIX ULTIMATE LASIK

Cataract Services

What is a cataract?

Cataract is a condition in which clouding of the lens occurs, which results in diminished eye sight. In normal individuals light enters the eye through the lens, the amount of light entering the eye is controlled by ‘Pupil’. Eventually, light then falls on the retina which is rich with blood vessels and nerves that send visual signals to the brain.

A cloudy formation in the eye lens in is thus a very discomforting situation hugely impairing the vision.

Services offered

Following are the cataract removal services available at Sandhya Eye Hospitals

Phacoemulsification :  Phacoemulsification is a surgical procedure in which cataract in the eye is emulsified with an ultrasound hand piece. This surgical method requires a very small incision and doesn’t require any stitches. After removal of the bits and pieces of cataract from the extant lens a new lens is then inserted into the eye. This procedure facilitates faster healing of the patient immensely and the patients can perform their normal work soon after the surgery.

Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) :  This is one of the fastest of cataract removal surgeries that can be undertaken at high volume and low cost. As the name suggests in this procedure cataract is removed manually after making a small incision in the eye. The small incision then heals quickly enabling patients to perform their daily chores.

Extracapsular Extraction :  Extracapsular extraction is a surgical procedure in which the lens of the eye is removed through a large incision. Later an artificial Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) is implanted and the incision is then closed with stitches. Healing process after extracapsular extraction is longer and this procedure is performed only in cases where the cataract is advanced.

Choice of lenses while cataract surgery

The following types of lenses can be implanted after cataract surgeries through a 1.8 to 2.8 mm opening

Aberration-Free/Aspheric IOLs

This category of Intra-ocular lens provides good quality vision to the patient after implantation in terms of greater contrast sensitivity and quality night vision. Besides, these lenses also filter out harmful UV/Blue light which are harmful to the retina.

Toric IOLs

These lenses after implantation correct astigmatism thereby helping the patient to avoid glasses for normal vision.

Multifocal IOLs

These IOLs provide clear vision for all distances therefore patients who had multifocal IOL implants need not wear glasses. At times, patients may experience glare during nights with multifocal IOL implants but gradually the vision adapts to these lenses.

Accommodating IOLs

These IOLs have flexible hinges which help to change focus depending on the distance of the object, thus avoiding the necessity of glasses for the patients.

Retina Services

What is Retina?

Retina is a transparent layer of tissue at the back of the eye. Retina is richly supplied with blood vessels and tissue. Light entering into the eye passing the cornea and the pupil finally falls on the Retina. Eventually nerves present in the retina send impulses to brain where the image is analyzed.

What are the parts of Retina?

Retina has the following parts

Macula (central retina) – analyzing fine details, reading and color vision

Peripheral Retina – useful for night vision

What are the symptoms of retinal disease?
  • Sudden or gradual decrease in vision
  • Loss of field of vision
  • Flashes of light
  • Floaters
  • Objects appearing distorted
  • Night blindness

Retina services offered at Sandhya Eye Hospitals include,

  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal wholes
  • Retinal imaging
  • Posterior segment evaluation

Glaucoma Services

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a condition of eye resulting in degeneration of the optic nerve. Glaucoma is also characterized by increased Intraocular Pressure (IOP).

Optic nerve present in the retina is crucial for proper for vision, and if left untreated Glaucoma can cause gradual loss of eye sight. Having a family history of glaucoma or being a diabetic puts an individual at more risk to glaucoma.

Glaucoma develops over a period of time, often without any recognizable symptoms or discomfort. Glaucoma though not preventable or curable the damage to the optic nerve can be reduced by early diagnosis and medical intervention.

Glaucoma Symptoms
  • Gradual loss of peripheral vision
  • Blurred vision

Glaucoma can be treated with medication or by surgery; occasionally requiring both.

Treatments for glaucoma mainly work by draining out the excess fluid from eye or resulting in secretion of less fluid from the eye.

Following are the services available at Sandhya Eye Hospitals to treat Glaucoma

  • Trabeculectomy combined with cataract surgery and IOL implantation
  • Laser treatment for glaucoma
